God Wink

The Urban Dictionary defines “God wink” as an occurrence so odd and out of the ordinary it had to be put in place by God. As 2014 draws to a close, I want to share some of my God wink moments with you.  In addition I want to encourage you to look for those moments in your lives in 2015.  I absolutely believe that God provides all of us with these personally tailored moments to encourage us, to remind of of His love, and to allow us to feel His presence.

A Spring day in April brought the appearance of sixteen baby ducks during a lunch break from work.  Most of my God winks are captured in photographs because God knows that I love to share His beautiful creation through them.  I didn’t eat lunch that day. I just took pictures, 200 of them, partially because I was attempting to get an accurate head count! We had just moved our son, Ben, to a new group home in Grenada, and his autism was making the adjustment extremely difficult.  God knew I was discouraged, and He knew exactly how to bring the joy of these babies and the peace of His presence into that moment, that day.  Pictures taken after work that day resulted in the writing of “Under His Wings” as a blog post. Look back in the archives and in that post you can read the rest of the story!

This Spring, I planted butterfly bushes in hopes of drawing more butterflies to photograph. The day before this photo was taken, Ben asked if I had seen any zebra butterflies yet on the new plants.  I clearly remember saying that might be more than we could hope for since we had seen only one in his twenty-six years of life.  This beautiful creature appeared the next day and patiently allowed me a forty-five minute photo shoot, during which I smiled and praised God for the moment.  This picture hangs in Ben’s room and my office as a reminder of that God wink!

A late season beach vacation resulted in this picture.  The story behind it is the Godwink moment.  While photographing a sunset, it seemed as though out of nowhere a short, elderly lady was standing beside me. It was quite chilly and she was bundled up in her coat and knitted hat. It was she who told me of how this beautiful crane and its mate made very early morning appearances on the beach for a brief period of time. Taking her at her word, I chose not to do the vacation sleep-in the next morning.  I was up and out with the sunrise, and look what was waiting for me!  More smiles of joy and thanks to God!

I will close with the story of this God wink. At summer’s end after most of the butterflies had flown away, the hummingbirds began enjoying the butterfly shrubs.  Obtaining a unblurry  photo of these intensely active birds on the flowers was on my bucket list of photos to take before they too were gone and the flowers faded. You can only imagine my surprise as I looked closely for the clearest picture to find that my hummingbird had company  Can you see it, the green lizard staring straight back as if to say, “I was here first!” Once in a lifetime shot, at least for me. God is so good!

Your Heavenly Father has moments like this waiting for you. Perhaps you are missing them even now. Open your eyes, slow down, watch them unfold. What encouragement, peace and joy they bring.

“Now may the Lord of peace Himself give you peace at all times and in every way.  The Lord be with all of you!” (2 Thessalonians 3:16)  To God Be the Glory! Spend 2015 in His presence!
