Resolutions Or A Relationship

Here we go!  A new year is already in the making.  Perhaps you are still recovering from the frenzy of 2014 Christmas Past.  How nice it is to take a breath and allow our minds a respite from the lists and tasks that never seem to end during the holidays. Rain is falling outside and Max, our Yorkie,  is snoring on the blanket draped over me in the recliner. Hope you are also finding opportunities to unwind.

As you know, resolutions are repeatedly called for each new year by friends, the media, etc. “New Year, New You” is an often used catch phrase.  The reclaiming of healthy lifestyles, better financial habits, and finding more enjoyment in life are often at the top of the resolution lists. New exercise equipment is debuted and books are released to help you carry out your plans. However, before the month of January has past, most resolutions are forgotten or deserted because life happens, and we don’t have the energy or discipline  to follow through.

Therefore, I would like to offer a suggestion for this year.  What if the “New Year, New You” mantra could be about a relationship instead of a resolution of self-directed betterment. I propose that we usher in 2015 with   our focus on a renewed relationship with Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

The “New You” that you are seeking is only a prayer away and requires a work of God, not of your own power. “Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.” (Psalm 51:10) These blessings would certainly begin your year with a peace and direction that no resolution could. Pursuing a daily walk and relationship with Christ, is the essence of life that you are seeking though the world has duped you into believing otherwise.

This relationship requires time, devotion and  priority which are small sacrifices in comparison to what Jesus has done for us. And the outcome is so much better than losing ten pounds or following through on your new gym membership. Resolutions cannot bring you peace, unconditional love, and grace. Your life will change and improve in ways you could not begin to imagine.  Why do we allow ourselves to be distracted from the gift of this relationship and choose the work of fighting through life on our own.

It is my hope that this year you will desire a new heart, a new mind, and a new spirit, all which come as a result of seeking out a Heavenly relationship. Remember to take it one day at a time.  God is love and He sees us through eyes of grace when we make mistakes or stray. Never let that deter your request for forgiveness and your commitment to continue that relationship. My prayers are with you. To God be the Glory!
